On Friday, March 13, 2020, Shirley Yancey, went home to be with the Lord after a long life of 83 years old on this earth. Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on March 29, 1936, Shirley was the daughter of the late Joe and Essie Sylvester. In 1951, she moved to Norfolk, Virginia with her Aunt Flora, shortly after she met her husband for life, Eddie Yancey. They were married until he deceased. In 2014, they were married for 57 years. Shirley had a way of voicing her opinion, no matter what the circumstances. In her adult years, she dedicated her life to the Lord Jesus Christ. She loved the Lord and gospel music and was always testifying about how good the Lord is and what he had done for her. Her spirit for the Lord was so strong she ended up convincing most of her kids to accept the Lord as their Savior. Shirley was a wonderful mother and wife. Most of her adult life she was a stay at home mom, who showered her kids with lots of love and strived to instill in them good values and character. She enjoyed keeping her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed, gardening, shopping, bicycle riding, watching movies and keeping a very clean home. She is predeceased by her children, Eddie Yancey, Jr. and Rowland Yancey. Shirley leaves behind to cherish her memories, her five loving children, Pamela Jones (Kenneth), Stephanie Yancey, Robert Yancey (Antoinette), Dianne Johnson (Isaac), and Sylvia Yancey; grandchildren, Andrew Patterson, Marcell Harris, LaToya Johnson, LaPorsha Harris, Shantell Harris, Brittney Barner, Darryl Jones, Brandon Yancey and David Yancey; twelve great-grandchildren; siblings, Joseph Sylvester, Jr., Gladys Sylvester, Robert Sylvester and Judy Sylvester.
