TEMPO.CO, Kalimantan - After causing quite a stir online, Pony, a Sumatran orangutan, has finally been able to return to her original habitat. The history of Pony’s anguished life left many in tears. Instead of caring for her like a beloved pet, Pony’s previous owners forced her into a life of prostitution.
As reported by Orangutan.or.id, the female orangutan had a dreadfully tragic life. She was forced into prostitution and the filthy desires of men. Men paid a certain amount of money to her owners to have sex with her.
No one really knows how long Pony lived in that desecrated house. The orangutan’s owners initially refused to give her up believing her to be a cash machine and source of luck. Anyone who tried to free Pony was in danger of facing an army of locals armed with cleavers, ready to fight for the owners.
After a long and exhausting process that lasted for a year, Pony was finally confiscated by the Central Kalimantan Conservation and Natural Resources Agency (BKSDA) together with the BOS Foundation and local authorities from a prostitution house in Pangi Kareng village, Central Kalimantan, in 2003. She was only six years old when she was rescued.
Now, Pony is 17 years old. The Orangutan Rehabilitation in Nyaru Menteng has relocated Pony to a pre-release island named Kaja Island. She is now able to make a nest and exhibits behavior consistent with an animal in the wild. On the island, Pony will receive the care she deserves from staff that will monitor her development and survival skills.
