Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” John 11:25-26

On April 11, 2022, Melvina Renee Reid, affectionately known as “Mel”, ascended to meet her Heavenly Father. Mel was born on September 21, 1972, in Wilson, North Carolina. She was a caring mother, sister, aunt, niece, friend and her favorite role of all, grandmother.

Her grandchildren were the joys of her life. She took great pride in spending time with them and spoiling them. Melvina enjoyed playing digital card games, listening to music and getting together with her close friends and family socially at each other’s houses.

Melvina was one of the sweetest, most kindhearted people you could ever meet. She wore a smile that would light up the room. Friends and coworkers relied on her for comic relief and support to get through their challenging days. Mel was a good listener and advisor, providing honest feedback…not what you wanted to hear, but what you needed to hear.

Melvina attended Maury High School, Norfolk, Virginia. At her demise, she was gainfully employed at the DMV, Widgeon Rd, where she was lovingly called “Gruma Mel.” Melvina previously worked at the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority and CMR, where she gained many close friends.

Mel was predeceased by her father, Melvin E. Horne; maternal grandmother, Joyce Witherspoon; maternal grandfathers, Sedrick Reid, Sr., and Leon Ward; paternal grandmothers, Mary E. Teat and Lucille Horne; aunts Ida Reid, Carolyn Reid, Verna Reid and Sheila Powell; uncle Sedrick Reid, Jr., and one grandson, Eugene Anthony Reid.

Melvina leaves to cherish her memory, her mother, Joyce Ann Reid Horne; father, Daniel Teat; two wonderful children, Kameshia “Meme” Reid and Tylik “Tye” Reid, Sr.; three loving sisters, Jennifer Galloway (Kay) of Charlotte, NC; Danielle Horne of Norfolk, VA; Tawanda Harris (Al) of Rocky Mount, NC; four grandchildren, Unique Shearin, Tylik Reid, Jr., Tyrell Reid, and Ka’Mya Freeman; three uncles, Jimmy Reid, Robin Reid and Anthony “Earl” Reid (Teresa); aunt, Gail Combs (James); eight nieces and nephews, Briana, Ariana, Trevion, Davon, Cameron, Prince, August and Jordan; goddaughter, Jakayla; godmother, Alice Brickhouse; two special sisters, Jenal Stephenson and Tamara Powell; bonus daughters, Keyera Johnson and Novella Shearin and a special cousin, Kevin Reid. Additionally, Mel leaves a host of cousins and friends to cherish her memory.

Melvina will definitely be missed in the earthly realm; however, we are at peace knowing that she is resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day- and not only me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
