His work on the galaxy-spanning adventure book Legion of Super-Heroes in the 1980s and 1990s made the title one of DC’s top sellers. He was also the artist on early 1980s title Omega Men where he and writer Roger Slifer introduced Lobo, a character who went from being a brutal villain to a popular anti-hero.

Giffen’s unique blend of subversive and sarcastic humor was showcased in the 1987 launch of Justice League International.
