Kim Gordon is an American musician, known for her work as the vocalist, bassist, and guitarist for Sonic Youth. Born in Rochester, New York in 1953, she started her career as a visual artist before forming Sonic Youth with Thurston Moore in 1981. She also formed the project Free Kitten and worked as a producer, including on the band Hole’s debut album in 1991. Gordon also worked on a fashion line, X-Girl.
After Sonic Youth disbanded in 2012, Gordon formed the band Body/Head and released their debut album in 2013. She published her memoir, Girl in a Band, in 2015. Sonic Youth released a total of 17 studio albums from 1983 to 2009. Gordon was married to Thurston Moore in 1984, but they separated in 2011 and divorced in 2013.
