John Starks was born on August 10th, 1965 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended Tulsa Central High School for one year before enrolling in Rogers State College in 1984. However, he was expelled for stealing a student’s stereo equipment. He then transferred to Northern Oklahoma College and made the basketball team after serving five days in jail for his robbery. John eventually left the college after being caught smoking marijuana in his dorm room.
John then enrolled at Tulsa Junior College to pursue a business degree. He was later invited to play for the Oklahoma Junior College basketball team, where he played for one season. In 1988, he earned a scholarship to the Oklahoma State University, where he finished his university career.
John Starks’ NBA Career
In 1988, Starks joined the Golden State Warriors for one season before being released due to injury. He then played for the Cedar Rapids Silver Bullets and the Memphis Rockers in the NBA’s minor league system for two seasons.
Starks tried out for the New York Knicks in 1990 and became their starting shooting guard after recovering from an injury. He played for eight seasons with the Knicks and was a key player, famously executing “The Dunk” during the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals.
In the 1993-1994 season, Starks and the Knicks made it to the NBA Finals but lost to the Houston Rockets. Starks recorded a career-high 19 points per game that season and became the first player in NBA history to make 200 three-point shots in one season the following year.
After his time with the Knicks, Starks played two seasons with the Golden State Warriors, one with the Chicago Bulls, and two with the Utah Jazz before retiring in 2002.
