TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian netizens typically discuss the banned Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) from early September until the turn of the year, a researcher at Data Driven Indonesia Muhammad Imran Hirawan said via text message received by Tempo yesterday.

From 2015 to June 2017, some 126 million Facebook accounts in Indonesia wrote status updates or commented on PKI. According to the former Lead Big Data Architect of Unicef, the fan pages generating the highest engagement score with ‘PKI’ contents are Zenius Education, Jonru and President Joko Widodo. “A post on PKI was shared ten times more than a clarification post.”

Netizens also liked articles on PKI and the National Armed Forces (TNI). “In the context of the TNI efforts to eradicate the PKI.”

Based on a statistical visualization, seven PKI articles got shared more on Facebook throughout 2016 and 2017.

The top two articles are titled “Tak Takut Dipecat, TNI Pastikan Akan Sweeping PKI Meski Presiden Jokowi Melarang” (Risking dismissal, the TNI confirms It will sweep up the PKI despite opposition from President Jokowi) with an engagement score of 168,900 and an article titled ‘Ngeri..!!! Jangan Lupakan Sejarah, Inilah Fakta Kebiadaban PKI Yang Telah membunuh Ribuan Muslim Indonesia” (Horrible..!!! Never forget: These are the facts behind the brutality of PKI that has killed thousands of Indonesian Muslims) with an engagement score of 117,700.

Of all Facebook accounts that have posted articles on PKI, fan page account Zanius Multimedia Learning posted an article that scored the highest engagement, garnering 619 comments, 284,200 likes and was shared 882 times, Imran said.
