The Pittsburgh Steelers and the rest of the NFL were rocked by the tragic death of quarterback Dwayne Haskins last month; an event made even more shocking by details revealed in Monday’s autopsy report.
It revealed that Haskins had been legally drunk, with a blood alcohol content of 0.20, when he was struck and killed on Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport just before dawn on April 9.
This was 2.5 times the legal limit for driving in Florida. The Steelers told CBS Pittsburgh they are aware of the report but declined to comment further.
In contrast, Florida Highway Patrol reports that the accident investigation is likely still ongoing, given that crash reports usually take 90 days to be finalized.
The toxicology report of the late Ohio State University football star and Heisman Trophy winner, Maurice Haskins, revealed an alarming amount of alcohol in the hours preceding his death.
At 230 pounds, according to the University of California-Davis, he would have had to have consumed at least ten drinks for that level of intoxication.
In addition to alcohol, the report also indicated that he had ketamine and its metabolite norketamine in his body.
Although doctors often prescribe these drugs for medical use, they can also be abused recreationally. Unfortunately, it is unknown why Haskins ingested this substance prior to his passing.
The tragic death of Haskins was a shock to his team and the public. Reports indicated that his car had run out of gas near the area where he was tragically struck by two vehicles.
It was noted that Haskins had gone to get fuel, but in an attempt to wave down cars for assistance, he was standing in the center lane when he was hit.
The medical examiner ruled it an accident, and though there were indications of potential substance use, the Steelers stated that he had no mental health issues or any record of suicidal threats.
Furthermore, beyond alcohol and marijuana, Haskins was not known to use other recreational drugs.
Whatever the exact circumstances leading up to this fatal incident may have been, there can be no denying that this is a heartbreaking occurrence with a devastating outcome.
Dwayne Haskins had been in South Florida for several days training with some of his Steelers teammates.
After spending the night having dinner and then presumably heading to a club with a friend or cousin, an argument ensued and they went their separate ways.
As the evening ended, he called his wife back at home in Pittsburgh informing her that he had run out of gas.
She became increasingly concerned when he failed to return any more calls or answer hers, culminating in her praying on a 911 dispatcher’s recording as she waited for them to put someone back on the line and provide her an update.
They advised her to remain on her phone for communication from the appropriate authorities.
While many expected rookie sensation Dwayne Haskins to take the NFL by storm after a sensational 2018 season at Ohio State, it didn’t quite turn out that way.
That year he threw for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns setting 16 school records and earning himself MVP awards for the Big Ten Championship game as well as Ohio State’s Rose Bowl win against Washington.
However, an unfortunate 3-10 overall record over two seasons with Washington that followed saw his departure from the team, leading him to be picked up by Pittsburgh on a developmental contract.
Though he couldn’t get into any starts last season, there is still plenty of time for the former Buckeye standout to make his prolific college plays cement his name among the NFL elite.
