Albert Lee Byrd entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. He was born on January 29, 1945 in Salisbury, N.C. to the late Arthur William Byrd, Sr. and Doris Littlejohn Byrd.
Albert accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized at Central Baptist Church as a young adult. As a member of Central Baptist Church, he served as chairman of the deacon board, home and bus ministry, Sunday school teacher, and member of the choir. Albert attended church faithfully until his health began to fail.
Albert, also known as “Butch” to family and close friends, graduated from Spingarn High School in Washington, D.C. in 1963. While in high school, he was active in sports that led to his attending Norfolk State University on a football scholarship. He graduated from Norfolk State in 1975. Prior to graduating from Norfolk State, he served in the U.S. Army for three years and did a tour in Vietnam.
Albert married the love of his life, Carol Ann Jordan of Portsmouth on Christmas Day in 1966 at Celestial Baptist Church. Two daughters were born to that union. Albert supported his family as a substitute teacher in the Portsmouth School System and being employed at Norshipco Repair Company, currently known as BAE Systems.
To cherish his memory, Albert leaves his wife of 52 years, Carol, who faithfully cared for him; two daughters, Arviette Hunter (Darrius) of Chesapeake, Va., and Andrea Jackson of Stafford, Va; three grandchildren, Darria Marie Hunter, Ivy Doris Jackson and Avery Xavier Jackson; two brothers, Arthur W. Byrd, II (Inez) of Richmond, Va. and Ronald Byrd (Tina) of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one sister, Angela Byrd of Washington, D.C.; a special aunt, Esther Littlejohn of Williston, Vt.; three nephews, Arthur Byrd, III., Ashley Byrd and Allyn Byrd and a host of family and friends.
